Preventing potholes

Contact: RMSA staff

Widespread damage to streets caused by inclement weather and other factors are often beyond the city’s control. While drivers have an obligation to be always aware of road conditions and adjust their driving behavior accordingly, cities can reduce risk and help keep streets smooth and well maintained. One way to do that it to ensure you are preventing potholes whenever possible.

How to prevent potholes

  • Have road inspection, complaint, response, and maintenance records. Documentation is key for determining liability in claims. Once you are given notice of a pothole – repair it in a timely manner to avoid additional vehicle damage (or worse!)
  • Make sure your drainage systems are up to date, well maintained and cleaned regularly. Removing leaves and other debris from storm drains. Developing a robust stormwater drain cleaning, maintenance, and complaint response system can help reduce surface water from pooling.
  • Although a temporary solution, crack sealing will prevent water from penetrating the road surface and can last roughly 3-8 years.  While this doesn't add structural strength to the pavement it does protect the underlying roadbed from moisture and saturation.
