Legislators propose changes to police officer hiring process

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

A senate bill removes the requirement for fully commissioned police officers and reserve police officers to undergo a polygraph before certification.

SB 6148, sponsored by Sen. Jesse Salomon (D-Shoreline), would remove the requirement to undergo a polygraph before entering the certification process to become an officer. Officer candidates would still be required to successfully pass a background investigation and a psychological examination.

AWC seeks feedback on this bill. Please contact Sharon or Jacob with your agency’s thoughts and concerns relating to the changes proposed in SB 6148.
