Eight takeaways from the legislative update at the Mayors Exchange

On Thursday, February 22, 2024, nearly 50 mayors gathered in Olympia to share news from home, discuss best practices, and hear an update on the legislative session from AWC’s Government Relations team.

Here are just a few of the key takeaways that came out of the legislative update and related discussion.

1. Cities need to stick together.
2. Community-driven decision-making is better than one-size-fits-all state-mandated decisions.
3. Mayors work hard to do good things for their communities. They make thoughtful decisions that reflect the needs of their residents—and should be trusted to be accountable to their residents.
4. You will inevitably encounter loud, vocal people at times, but remember there may also be many supportive people in your community who are not as vocal. Consider all the perspectives and how they align with your community’s values and priorities.
5. Trust the leadership of cities, and trust each other to do the right thing.
6. State agencies may be fine, but they are no substitute for local input and community-based decisions.
7. Keep track of the impacts and costs related to legislation and state decisions, because that data is critical in communicating with legislators.
8. Don’t let others divide us. When cities work together and with other local governments, we are more successful.
