WSP Crime Lab develops new process for public records requests

Contact: Sharon Swanson, Jacob Ewing

The Washington State Patrol’s (WSP) Crime Lab Division (Crime Lab) is responding to a number of public records requests involving cases from local law enforcement agencies.

WSP recognizes that these public records requests may have an impact on local law enforcement agencies. To this end, WSP plans to follow the process outlined below when responding to public records requests that impact local law enforcement agencies:

  1. Provide local law enforcement agencies with a copy of the request for Crime Lab data directly related to that agency;
  2. WSP will review and redact exempt information from the Crime Lab case file and provide a redacted copy of the requested records to the impacted law enforcement agency’s public records officer; and
  3. The impacted law enforcement agency will have two weeks to review the redacted Crime Lab files and obtain an order enjoining disclosure if they object to the production of the requested files.
